Drag Queen Story Time!

0 0

Recently, my family and I went to a Drag Queen Story Time event at the Broomfield Library It was well organized and a really fun time. Shirley Delta Blow hosted the event and I really couldn’t say enough good things about it. The event itself was beyond family-friendly. The books that were read were about positive self-image and being different. To increase accessibility, there was a screen to project the books so even folks in the back could see the pictures. Families were invited to sit on stage if they wanted, which of course we did. If you’ve never been to one, it is worth checking out, not to mention it was free to the community! Thank you Broomfield Library and Shirley!

Drag Queen Story Times are great for families because….

  1. They promote literacy and reading.
  2. They are in the community.
  3. They’re FUN and Colorful!
  4. Drag Queens are queens of performing, which includes reading children’s books.
  5. Can meet other LGBT+ folks and Allies.

Free speech is important and that guy still sucks!

Of course, anytime someone from the LGBT+ community steps out into the spotlight, there are bound to be people who are going to complain. Unfortunately this event, like many other Drag Queen Story Times, was no different. There was a man with a loud speaker protesting LGBT+ people. Luckily, the Parasol Patrol was there to block some of the noise with Headphones and Big Umbrellas. Now the worst part about this was that it’s harder to explain this man yelling obscene and hateful things than it is to explain drag. Clearly that guy lacks awareness but I hope one day he realizes that talking graphically about sex in front of preschoolers is predatory and if he doesn’t, hopefully someone legally charges him.
